Red & Black Light

Attention lieu commun ! « Ibrahim Maalouf est un artiste aux multiples talents ». Une formule qui sent un peu la flagornerie journalistique, mais il est difficile pourtant d'utiliser une autre tournure pour résumer le personnage. Car non content de nous asséner depuis sa trilogie « Dia- » - achevée avec Diagnostic - des albums de très haut vol, jusqu'au récent Illusions, il se permet, entre deux Victoires du Jazz, d'exceller de la même façon dans divers projets parallèles comme cette relecture d'Alice aux Pays des Merveilles en duo avec Oxmo Puccino, ou la musique de film (Yves Saint-Laurent, Red Rose…). Et voici maintenant que notre trompettiste, facile, nous annonce la sortie non pas d'un, mais de deux nouveaux disques : Khaltoum qui revisite Alf Leila Wa Leila de la légendaire diva égyptienne Oum Kalthoum, et Red & Black Light, ode à la femme d'aujourd'hui, selon les propres mots de l'artiste. Deux œuvres radicalement différentes, deux facettes d'un musicien hors pair.

Red & Black Light reprend les choses là où Illusions les avait laissées. Si le jazz reste le terreau dans lequel les huit titres plongent leurs racines, la fusion, la funk, la pop et même l'électro se partagent très largement les ramures de cette belle plante. Avec un brin d'emphase cinématographique par ci par là. Le vintage s'allie aux sonorités modernes pour maintenir le tout dans le bon goût et, on n'en doute pas, aider l'album à bien vieillir. Le Franco-libanais possède ce don somme toute assez rare de composer avec une aisance déconcertante de petites boucles mélodiques qui restent en tête et se rappellent à vous à l'improviste, n'importe où et n'importe quand, au boulot, dans les transports en commun ou sous la douche. Les volutes de sa trompette à quarts de ton s'insinuent, énergiques ou décontractés, dans des compositions tantôt compactes et efficaces (« Red & Black Light », « Essentielles »), tantôt plus aérées, propices aux digressions et aux solos (« Escape », « Goodnight Kiss »). Discrètement complexe mais éminemment accessible, le jazz très métissé de Red & Black Light s'adresse à tout le monde. Et même aux fans de Beyoncé – si si puisqu'on vous le dit - comme en témoigne la reprise de « Run The World (Girls) ». C'est dire l'ouverture d'esprit du bonhomme.
